The interim government has scrapped eight national days commemorated by Bangladesh, including National Mourning Day on Aug 15 and the celebration of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s speech on Mar 7.
Asked about the post, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, deputy press secretary to the chief advisor, said: “The advisors’ cabinet recently made the decision to cancel those eight national days. The Cabinet Division will soon issue a notice scrapping those eight national days.”
Five of these cancelled days are connected to the births and deaths of Sheikh Hasina’s family.
These are Bangabandhu’s birthday and National Children’s Day on Mar 17, the birthday of Hasina’s brother Sheikh Kamal on Aug 5, the birthday of Hasina’s mother Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib on Aug 8, the anniversary of Bangabandhu’s assassination and National Mourning Day on Aug 15, and the birthday of Hasina’s younger brother Sheikh Rasel on Oct 18.
The three others cancelled are the commemoration of Bangabandhu’s historic Mar 7 speech, National Constitution Day on Nov 4, and Smart Bangladesh Day on Dec 12.
Of these national days, Bangabandhu’s birth and death days on Mar 17 and Aug 15 were public holidays.
